The Ennedi Massif

History

The Terkei sector, in the southern Sahara within the World Heritage–listed Ennedi massif, gathers caves and shelters once inhabited. The rock shelters served as refuge, byre and sanctuary over several millennia.

The walls carry Bovidian-period paintings — herds of contrastingly marked cattle, slender figures, camp scenes — overlaid in places on older engravings and covered elsewhere by much more recent dromedary silhouettes. This visual stratigraphy makes Terkei one of the most legible sites for understanding the succession of Saharan art periods.
