The Ennedi Massif

Guelta of Bachikélé

Less hemmed in than Archei, fringed with palms and borassus, with clear water and a baboon colony living in the cliffs.

History

Another guelta, another atmosphere. Wider than Archei, the Bachikélé guelta is fringed with palms and tropical trees. The glowing cliffs around the canyon are home to a baboon colony that thinks nothing of coming down into the guelta and climbing the borassus trunks to eat the fruit.

Its water is clear and cool, with grass along the edges. The herds drink from the stream downstream, which keeps the spring basin itself clean — unlike Archei, where animals drink directly from the guelta.
