The Ennedi Massif
A maze of sandstone corridors stretching for kilometres, walked between vertical walls with the horizon never in sight.
The Oyo labyrinths were formed by the fracturing of the sandstone plateau. A network of perpendicular joints was patiently widened by water and wind until the rock was cut into blocks separated by corridors a few metres wide and tens of metres high.
To walk in Oyo is to lose all bearings: the sky narrows to a strip, the walls throw back ochre and violet light depending on the hour. Side shelters hold paintings and engravings, and the place served as a natural refuge — easy to defend, impossible to cross for anyone who does not know it.
