History
The Elephant Rock is an erosion witness: a remnant of the upper sandstone layer, preserved because a harder stratum capped it. Sand-laden wind attacks mainly the base — hence the mushroom forms characteristic of the Ennedi, broad above and pinched at the foot.
There are dozens in the massif, but this one has become a landmark: caravans navigated by it long before travellers began stopping there.
