The Tibesti Mountains
An actively steaming field of fumaroles and sulphurous mud at 2,000 m on the flanks of Tarso Toussidé.
Soborom is proof that Tibesti volcanism is not extinct. Over a few hectares, fumaroles vent sulphurous steam above 100 °C, mud pools boil, and mineral deposits stain the ground yellow, orange and green.
The Toubou have always used the site for its therapeutic properties: rheumatism and skin conditions are treated by coating oneself in the hot mud. The smell of sulphur carries for hundreds of metres.
