Zakouma National Park
3,054 km² of floodplain savannah, a herd of over 600 elephants and one of the last Kordofan giraffe populations.
Created in 1963, Zakouma is Chad's oldest national park. Its ecology is dictated by water: during the rains, June to October, the plain floods and wildlife disperses. Then the water withdraws, the pans dry one by one, and animals concentrate on the last water points — when the park offers its greatest gatherings.
Industrial poaching in the 2000s destroyed nearly 90% of the elephant population. African Parks taking over management in 2010, in partnership with the Chadian government, reversed the trajectory: numbers are climbing, and the herd — exceptionally tight-knit, a behaviour linked to the trauma of poaching — often moves as a single block.
