Zakouma National Park
At the end of the dry season, thousands of crowned cranes, pelicans and marabous gather on these pans — one of Africa’s great bird spectacles.
Rigueik is the climax of the dry season at Zakouma. As the park's pans dry out, wildlife falls back on the last sheets of water. Rigueik is one of them, and the result is striking: columns of crowned cranes in their thousands, white pelicans in tight rafts, marabous, saddle-billed storks, and around them elephants, buffalo and antelope coming to drink.
The peak falls in March–April, just before the first rains.
